Downloading and Un-Zipping Video Clips

In the fall of 2010, I have changed the format in which you download videos. Now, whether you are on a Mac or PC, all videos are provided in a ".zip" format. The ".zip" format means the file you want has been compressed into a little "package" that needs to be unwrapped - for lack of a better explanation.

You need to "unzip" the file in order to get to the video. By now, most all computers should be able to do this on their own. Simply double click on the file after you download it and (depending upon your software and operating system), extract the file for you.

StuffitIf your computer doesn't know what to do with the file when you double click on it, it's possible you don't have an extraction program such as Stuffit. It is essential for any computer (Mac or Windows) to have one of these programs. I recommend Stuffit for the Mac and it's available as a FREE download (available by clicking on the icon at right) for extracting downloaded files. For programmers like myself, I use a paid version to help compress and upload files. If you can't decide, I prefer Stuffit. I think it's easier and more intuitive.

Camera LensLive Cam Help

Assuming you already downloaded QuickTime and you're running OSX 10.3.9, or greater, you should be able to view the Live Cam with minimal problems. If everything else seems to be in place and you're still having problems, these four easy steps should solve any remaining pesky problems. Please note, after making any changes to your QuickTime settings, it's best to re-connect to the Live Cam feed. You don't have to exit the program, but you should close any open QuickTime window and re-establish your connection to the feed.

If your problem persist, please follow the additional uidelines below that resolve most problems:

Step One
Open Quicktime Preferences
Quicktime Live Cam

Step Two
Click on the ADVANCED Tab and go to the TRANSPORT SETUP menu.

Select CUSTOM.

A new popup window will appear as shown in step three.

Quicktime Live Cam

Step Three

Make sure you're settings are set to HTTP and PORT ID 80.

At this point, EXIT any open QuickTime windows and RECONNECT to the KidRacer-X Live Cam.

Is your signal working now?

If not, move to step four.

Quicktime Live Cam

Step Four

Click the STREAMING TAB and select your current internet speed. Although the automatic setting should work in most cases, it may help to make a selection here.

Don't know your speed? Make a close guess. The more accurate your selection, the better your performance will be.

If anything, don't pick a higher speed then what you receive.

Again, EXIT any open QuickTime windows and RECONNECT to the KidRacer-X Live Cam.

Quicktime Live Cam

Ultimately, the Live Cam is incredibly easy to use and access. Most problems result from the following...

  • You don't have QuickTime 7 (or greater)
  • You're operating system is older than 10.3.9
  • You don't have broadband (DSL/Cable/T1)
  • You have a firewall (a protective software or hardware configuration) to prevent incoming data feeds. At your own discretion, you may want to adjust those restrictive settings.
  • Your Transport Setup is NOT set to HTTP and PORT ID 80 and it probably should be
  • After you made the suggested settings changes, you didn't re-establish your connection to the Live Cam feed. Try quitting QuickTime and then re-connect to the Live Cam signal.
